Eckerkon - Unconference in memory of Peter Eckersley

Sunday March 5, 2023

Doors open at 10:00, with a reception of snacks and drinks in the evening.

Venue
Internet Archive, San Francisco

Peter was a community builder and friend to many. His kindness, sparkling intelligence and whimsical charm that endeared him to so many friends and loved ones also brought stakeholders to the table, gathered different parties around shared vision and instigated groundbreaking change that still shapes the internet today. He loved the world courageously, and this meant at times, standing up to powerful forces.

On March 5th, 2023 (the day after Peter's professional memorial), we are hosting a private unconference in Peter's memory.

The organizers will provide the space, a blank agenda, some ground rules, and light facilitation. You show up with some ideas for some topics you'd want to discuss with other people, collaboratively design the agenda with other participants - and spend the day talking about things that interest you with people from the extended Peterverse you may already know or maybe meeting for the first time. If you knew Peter and enjoy interesting conversations, this event is for you – nothing else required.

To keep things on track, we would like sessions to generally focus on areas of Peter's interest, but we are also happy if people have other ideas for things they'd like to propose.

Because of space and complexity limitations, we're going to cap ourselves at 100 participants (based on order of signup), so if you're interested please sign up soon. We're hoping to have more events in the future too.. If we're over capacity, maybe someone else can plan an event nearby.

There will also be thought workshops/speeches by leading friends and thinkers of Peter’s, including:

  • Toby Ord, Future of Humanity Institute, University of Oxford

  • Seth Schoen, Former Senior Staff Technologist, Electronic Frontier Foundation

  • Anders Sandberg, Future of Humanity Institute, University of Oxford

  • De Kai, Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at HKUST

  • Steven Adler, Former Chief of Staff, Partnership on AI

  • Brittney Gallagher, Co-founder and Interim Executive Director, AI Objectives Institute

  • Deger Turan, President, AI Objectives Institute

This is an invite-only event, please apply here if you would be interested in attending.
